The Conciliation Project Uncovering History at Unity Church of Richmond

What is the difference between sex and gender?  Who is an American?  What parts of history have been covered up and ignored?  For five years The Conciliation Project (TCP) has been presenting plays, asking questions, collaborating with communities, and stirring up dialogue on racism throughout the Richmond region.  You may have seen them recently partnering with The Daily Planet at the historic Empire Theatre, presenting plays at the Firehouse Theatre, or perhaps on the VCU campus in an event sponsored by VCU and the NAACP chapter.  Their next community partnership will be with the Unity Church of Richmond near Byrd Park, presenting Global SeXXXism: un-wrapped and the East Coast premiere of Yellow Fever: the internment.

TCP’s mission is to promote, through active and challenging dramatic work, open and honest dialogue about Racism in America in order to repair its damaging legacy.  They are a creative social justice organization using theatrical techniques and the dramatic form as a catalyst to inform, inspire and include everyone in the dialogue on racism in America.  About TCP, Artistic Director Dr. Tawnya Pettiford-Wates, says, “TCP was birthed together with those who wanted to do something more with their artistic expression and need to organize. We wanted to create an organization that embraced the Artistic and the Activist, together we forged The Conciliation Project.”

Global SeXXXism: Unwrapped is a journey through the “dis-ease” in the world, the infection of systemic racial and sexual prejudice and fear. It tells a story that needs to be heard. With headlines continually inundating us with issues like violence against women, children, rape, exploitation, threats to reproductive rights and the unattainable ideal of what beauty is it is urgent that we begin to honestly examine the historic legacy that has brought us to such a time. Conciliation is “the process of winning over from a state of hostility.” In the spirit of conciliation this play intends to help us promote honest dialogue between people, that we might conciliate our past and build our future together.

Through Asian performance art, multimedia, and a blend of music and dance, Yellow Fever: the internment takes us through the history of the internment, racist ideologies and the war time hysteria. The Asian Exclusion Act was the precursor that set the stage for the spread of Yellow Fever and anti-Asian racism. Around the period of World War II, these racist attitudes and stereotypes were created and perpetuated throughout the media. Of the 110,000 Japanese-American people to be interned after Pearl Harbor, not one was convicted of spying for Japan. This poetic drama explores the mysteries of war-time hysteria and the human drama behind the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima and the stories that have been withheld from our collective consciousness.

Both plays will be performed in repertory in association with Unity Church of Richmond, 800 Blanton Avenue, Richmond, Virginia 23221.  Global Sexxxism: un-wrapped will run Wednesday March 24 through Saturday March 27 and Yellow Fever: the internment will run March 31 through April 3.  All performances are at 8pm and ticket prices are $10 with a $5 discount on a second ticket when you see both shows.  For more information, please visit www.theconciliationproject.org or call TCP at 703-946-5217 or Unity of Richmond at 804-278-6489.

LAST SUMMER AT BLUEFISH COVE

OPENS MARCH 17

Landmark Play Part of Statewide “Minds Wide Open” Celebration

Last Summer at Bluefish Cove, Jane Chambers’ play about love, fidelity and ultimately what really makes a family, will open on Wednesday, March 17, at Richmond Triangle Players’ theater at 1300 Altamont Avenue in Richmond.  .

The play, considered a landmark in gay and lesbian theater history, is directed by Noreen Barnes, and is part of the statewide event “Minds Wide Open: A Celebration of Women in the Arts.”

The play centers around Lil, who is trying to escape the stress of her terminal illness by heading to the beach resort of Bluefish Cove and the comfort of her female friends.  She meets a younger woman, Eva, who is unaware that the cabin she rented is intended for lesbians who value their privacy.  Eva and Lil hit it off, and  begin an unexpected friendship that fuels Lil's happiness and helps her cope with her impending illness.  The play, both heartfelt and humorous, will touch a chord with almost anyone who has ever been in love.

Jane Chambers, whose A Late Snow was produced by RTP in 1997, was one of the first playwrights to create openly lesbian characters who were at ease with their own homosexuality. As Chambers told the New York Times, "As we become more comfortable with ourselves, the rest of the world will become comfortable with us." Sadly, her life ironically mirrored her characters in Bluefish Cove when she lost her own battle with cancer just a few short years after the play’s premiere.

RTP’s production features several performers well-known to its audiences, as well as some new faces.  Kathy Northrup Parker (Sordid Lives, Southern Baptist Sissies) plays the role of Lil, originated in 1980 by Jean Smart.  Jeanie Rule, who recently appeared the glamorous chanteuse Miss Vivian in RTP’s hit production of Pulp, plays Kitty, a well-known feminist writer, and Donna Coghill (The Secretaries, The First Step) plays her rival Annie.

New to the RTP stage is Emma Mason as Eva, with Linda Beringer as Sue, Rebecca Bernard as Rita, Rebecca Hinkle as Rae, and Kirsten Riiber as Donna.  Set design is by David A. McLain, costume design by Karl Green and Derin White, and lighting design by K. Jenna Ferree.  Trevor A. Riley is production stage manager.

After its opening on Wednesday, March 17 at 8 pm, Last Summer at Bluefish Cove will perform Thursday through Saturday evenings through April 10 at 8 pm, with two Sunday matinees at 4 pm on March 28 and April 11.  Reserved seat tickets ($25 for Opening Night, Fridays and Saturdays, $20 for Thursdays and Sundays) can be purchased online at RTP’s web site or by calling the RTP Ticket hotline at 804-346-8113.

RTP’s new theater at 1300 Altamont Avenue is a 4000-square foot performing arts facility accommodating flexible seating arrangements for up to 90 patrons.  The building features fully ADA-compliant access and comfortable restrooms, as well as a generous bar, and catering capability, and will also be made available for cabaret performances and private events.

For more information, please contact managing director Philip Crosby at 804-342-7665 or by e-mail at Crosby@rtriangle.org.

PROPOSED FUNDING CUTS FOR THE VIRGINIA COMMISSION FOR THE ARTS

Dear Friends and Theatre Lovers,

The House budget plan released by the House Appropriations Committee on Sunday calls for reducing arts grants through the Virginia Commission for the Arts by 50 percent during FY11 and eliminating the Commission altogether at the end of FY12.
An attempt to abolish the Commission in the early 1990s was rejected by the General Assembly and led to the creation of Virginians for the Arts to serve as a permanent advocacy force. This recommendation by the House committee represents a regrettable step backwards to 1990.
It is critical that arts advocates contact House members and ask them to oppose this recommendation on the floor of the House in the budget debate, which will be held on Thursday, February 25.
Faxes and phone calls are recommended before email. Find contact information for your legislator here.
Talking points are available here on the Virginians for the Arts website.

As it stands Virginia is already ranked one the lowest states in the county in regards to it's funding of the arts.  For example most states give about $4.00+ per citizen in each city towards arts funding (you can find the details on this if you click on the "talking points" link below.)  Richmond passed a law in the early 1990's that allotted $1.00 per citizen towards funding for the arts.  We have never reached that dollar level and are currently receiving .51 cents per person.  So what they are talking about it reducing this to .25 cents per citizen and then elimination all together.  This would place Virginia in the very unique place of being one of the only state in the county that does not fund the arts.  Please do not let this happen!

The Richmond Times Dispatch ran an article reporting about the budget cuts with only one line dedicated to the arts funding reductions.  Read the article here.
At Henley Street, we believe in the arts community of central Virginia and the entire Commonwealth.  Thank you for taking the time to contact your representative and voice your opinion.

Sincerely,
Jessica Fulbright
President
Henley Street Theatre Company

Crumble (Lay Me Down, Justin Timberlake)

The Firehouse Theatre will explore complex themes of loss and reclamation when the third production of its 2009-10 season, "Crumble (Lay Me Down, Justin Timberlake)", opens on Feb. 25.

Blurring the lines between mother and those needing mothering, award-winning playwright Sheila Callaghan tells the story of 11-year old Janice, whose father has recently died, and her devastated mom, who trusts in superior baking skills as the key to healing. While her mother fires up the oven and dreams of Harrison Ford, Janice dreams of Justin Timberlake and compiles a very strange, very explosive Christmas wish list. Toss a crumbling, mercurial apartment into the mix, and the road to redemption is a twisted one, indeed.

"Crumble is one of the most unique and moving plays ever to be brought to Richmond theatre audiences," said Carol Piersol, the Firehouse's founding artistic director. "Sheila Callaghan gives life to characters and events that are at once tragic and entertaining - but always believable."

This dynamic play runs Feb. 25-March 20, with shows at 8 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays. Tickets are $25 each for adults, $22 for seniors 65 and older, and $10 for students and RAPT members with ID. Two "pay-what-you-will" performances are scheduled for 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 7, and Sunday, March 14.

Tickets are available at www.firehousetheatre.org or by calling 804-355-2001. Half-season subscription and group discounts are available.

Sheila Callaghan is a New York City-based playwright whose works have earned her numerous honors including the Princess Grace Award. The New York Times has said Callaghan "writes with a world-weary tone and has a poet's gift for economical description." She has been profiled by prominent theatre media including American Theater Magazine, and has taught playwriting and English at the University of Rochester, the College of New Jersey, Spalding University, Brooklyn College, LaGuardia Community College, and Florida State University.

Directed by long-time Firehouse associate Bill Patton, Crumble features Christina Billew, Frank Creasy, Matt Hackman, Lisa Kotula, and Jen Meharg.

This Firehouse production is a proud part of the Acts of Faith Festival (www.theactsoffaith.org)and Minds Wide Open (www.vamindswideopen.org).

Following are additional special events scheduled so far around this performance:

- Opening night on Thursday, Feb. 25, will be catered by Carytown Cupcakes.
- Acts of Faith talk-backs are scheduled for immediately following performances on Friday, Feb. 26, and Sunday, March 14.
- Paintings by artist Terry Powers will be displayed in the theatre throughout the production.

Here is a sample of critics' raves about previous productions of Crumble:

"Soon-to-be classic... whatever you do, don't miss it... amazing..." - Entertainment Today

"Small, dark, and gratifyingly odd." - Washington City Paper

"Moments of nail-biting anguish... weirdly satisfying... Callaghan's writing is studded with startling descriptive passages." - Chicago Tribune (Top 10 "fringe" shows of '05)

We meet Edith, the pastor’s wise-cracking wife, the witty Luby, Mae Ellen, the rebellious organist and more zany characters. Fast forwarding twenty-five years, these six women reunite, but much has changed…and hasn’t. Winner of the Tony Award and Outer Critics Circle Award, the story of the Joad family and their flight from the dust bowl of Oklahoma is familiar to all. Desperately proud, but reduced to poverty by the loss of their farm and the Great Depression, the Joads pile their few possessions on a battered old truck and head west for California, hoping to find work and a better life. The play stays true to Steinbeck's novel and remains a soaring and deeply moving affirmation of the indomitability of the human spirit, and of the essential goodness and strength which—then as now—resides in the hearts and minds of the "common man," throughout the world. "A thrilling theatrical achievement that gets its power from the still sharp relevance of its human message…" —NY Post
