Virginia Excellence in Theatre Award
We are proud to present this year’s Virginia Excellence in Theatre Award to The Rev. Dr. Vienna Cobb Anderson
Before earning national recognition as a scholar, author and Episcopal priest, Vienna Cobb Anderson was a pioneering theatre artist. As an award winning actress, she delighted audiences at the Virginia Museum Theatre, Barter Theatre and Off-Broadway. She majored in drama at Yale, studied at the Shakespeare Institute at Stratford Upon Avon for a summer, and had a Fulbright scholarship to the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts. She also spent three seasons at Barter Theatre where she was named best young actress in 1957 and received her award from Ethel Merman.
In 1966, at Barksdale Theatre at Hanover Tavern, she became the first woman to direct a professional stage production in Virginia history. There she staged successful productions of both Boeing-Boeing and Any Wednesday. She was the first to open a door through which scores of women directors have followed in the half-century since. In grateful recognition for all her groundbreaking professional accomplishments, Virginia Repertory Theatre proudly presents the 2020 Virginia Excellence in Theatre Award to Vienna Cobb Anderson.
