Dedication – John Glenn

John Glenn

Like the astronaut/senator who was his namesake, John Glenn the director and actor was well loved for his achievements, his character, and an open heart as vast and unlimited as space. John first moved to Richmond to work as a touring actor with Theatre IV in 1980 when he was all of 18 years old. Two years later, he assumed the role of Associate Artistic Director of Theatre IV, a position he held for the next decade. In 1993, John was named Artistic Director of Barksdale Theatre, an honor he cherished for four years, before moving to artistic leadership positions with Company of Fools in Hailey, Idaho. While at Theatre IV, John directed our landmark production of Quilters and our world premiere of Four Part Harmony. He played major roles in numerous shows including West Side Story, Cabaret, Where’s Charley?, Biloxi Blues, Equus, and A Little Night Music. At Barksdale he directed Falsettosand the world premieres of Bojangles and Turn of the Screw.

John established himself as one of the most influential, irreplaceable, and beloved theatre artists in Richmond theatre history. His passing last year was unexpected. In Poppins-speak, he was practically perfect; in cold hard reality, he was exceptional. With the greatest affection and respect, we dedicate this production of Mary Poppins to the cherished, undying memory of our one and only John Glenn.
