By | May 14, 2017

TheatreLAB, Richmond’s home for unexpected and evocative performance, is proud to present George Brant’s GROUNDED as the final show of The Cellar Series: When The Other Becomes The Self. Directed by Maggie Roop and starring Bianca Bryan, the show will run May 26 thru June 3 at TheatreLAB’s venue, The Basement (300 East Broad Street).

“GROUNDED is a heartbreaking, beautiful, necessary and perfectly-structured solo drama … an essential story for our times.” – The Scotsman

“Thought-provoking, thoroughly engrossing…pulses with the rhythms of an epic war poem.” – TheatreMania

“Critic’s Pick. A scorching sharp-eyed, timely script…lets no one off easy…clap all you want at the end of the play—and you’ll want to clap a lot—but the game stays with you” – Time Out New York

More about the show –

An ace fighter pilot’s career in the sky is ended early due to an unexpected pregnancy. Reassigned to operate military drones from a windowless trailer outside Las Vegas, she hunts terrorists by day and returns to her family each night. As the pressure to track a high-profile target mounts, the boundaries begin to blur between the desert in which she lives and the one she patrols half a world away.

From GROUNDED Director, Maggie Roop:

“The ability to exercise the imagination is directly linked to compassion and empathy. This is why I cannot think of a better medium than theatre to explore the conflict that is presented in GROUNDED. The one-woman play format permits us to engage our imaginations as the Pilot takes us along on her journey. Just as the playwright provides us a rich opportunity to see commonality in that which may be completely foreign to us; the thrill of flight in battle or the brutality of advancing military technology, he presents us with a lens through which to observe the effects distance, change, cruelty, humanity, and ultimately mercy can have on the human psyche. Where do you turn when everything is witnessed?”

From Grounded Actor, Bianca Bryan:

“One actor tells the story, and your mind fills in the rest. Whether or not you know anything about this subject matter, you’ll find yourself drawn in and able to relate to GROUNDED… It’s heartbreaking and harrowing knowing that this is real. This happens on a daily basis. This is a story that needs to be heard.”

The production team includes Direction by Maggie Roop; Lighting Design by Erin Barclay; Costume and Props Design by Amber Martinez; Sound and Projection Design by Kelsey Cordrey; with Stage Management by Sofia Malin.
