We are thrilled to welcome to Virginia Rep the cast of our first production of the 2022/23 Signature Season, Chicken & Biscuits. The first rehearsal began with a Zoom visit from the playwright, Douglas Lyons, who encouraged the cast to fully explore this play and find the joy in it.

Lyons spoke about his play to writer Diep Tran in 2021, when it debuted on Broadway. “Broadway and Hollywood love to see Black people pillaged, raped, struggling, oppressed. I’m tired of it,” he said. “That’s not the majority of my experience growing up. We were not that. There was so much laughter and shade and food and love everywhere. And I don’t see that in the American theater. So I’m trying to bring that joy center stage,” Lyons said..

Chicken & Biscuits follows the Jenkins family as they come together to celebrate the life of their father. Eldest daughter, Baneatta (Cynthia Carter), wants everything to be perfect. Self-proclaimed favorite daughter, Beverly (C Kelly Wright), would rather honor her daddy (Dale Heiskill) by dressing to show off. Teenage granddaughter, La’Trice (Tyandria Jaaber), can’t mind her own business.  There’s also grandson Kenny (Brandon Alvion) and his Jewish boyfriend Logan (Jeffry Allen Sneed), plus Kenny’s older sister, Simone (Shelby Marie Edwards), who’s recently gone through a failed engagement. Then, everything starts to unravel when a family secret shows up at the funeral.

Join us for this hilarious comedy from September 30 – October 30 at the November Theatre.
