TheatreLAB & 5th Wall Theatre are thrilled to announce open auditions for HAND TO GOD by Robert Askins, directed by Gary C. Hopper. The audition will be held on October 7th from (10am-2pm) at TheatreLAB’s home, The Basement at 300 East Broad St, RVA.

The good children of Cypress, Texas are taught to obey the Bible in order to evade Satan’s hand. But when students at the Christian Puppet Ministry put those teachings into practice, one devout young man’s puppet takes on a shocking personality that no one could have expected. In this hilarious and lightning-paced comedy, a foul-mouthed sock puppet named Tyrone soon teaches those around him that the urges that can drive a person to give in to their darkest desires fit like a glove. HAND TO GOD explores the startlingly fragile nature of faith, morality, and the ties that bind us.

“Robert Askins’ darkly delightful play really inspires goose bumps… flat-out hilarious, spewing forth acid comedy that will turn those goose bumps into guffaws… A true tour-de-force.”
— The New York Times

“HAND TO GOD is so ridiculously raunchy, irreverent and funny it’s bound to leave you sore from laughing. Ah, hurts so good… It can’t be outdone – and shouldn’t be missed.”
— New York Daily News

Please prepare two, one-minute audition pieces. One piece should be comic in nature and done with a Texas accent. The other piece should be serious in nature and should demonstrate the actor’s ability to use emotional subtext. Please supply a resume and headshot when you arrive for your audition.

The following roles are available:

MARGERY – late 30s/early 40s – Jason’s mother; a highly stressed woman trying desperately to keep her family and life together after the death of her husband; has a warm, passionate nature, but she’s a powder keg about to explode.

PASTOR GREG – late 30s/early 40s – Minister of the local Lutheran church; tries valiantly to fulfill his duties as the shepherd of his flock; seemingly supportive; underneath, however, it is clear that his altruism is fueled by needy loneliness.

TIMOTHY – late teens* – High school alpha male; a total bully; a troubled young man, caught in survival mode at having to negotiate his dysfunctional family; he protects his fragility by forgoing any impulse control.

JESSICA/JOLENE – middle teens* – a complicated young woman trapped in a small town with small ideas; smart, though somewhat introverted; an outsider with a sense of fearlessness; credible love-interest for Jason.

The role of JASON/TYRONE has been cast.

*PLEASE NOTE: Roberts Askins, the playwright, states the following – “the kids are played by actors that look young… but by no means the 15-17 year-olds that they are intended to be.”

Callbacks will be held on October 8th starting at 6pm.

Auditions are by appointment only. To schedule an audition, please email Stage Manager, Breezy Potter [] with “Hand To God Audition” in the subject line. All actors paid.
