Synopsis: Six strangers escape city life for a silent retreat in the woods to confront their inner demons. But the vows of silence that seemed so attractive to them at the outset become constraints when they recognize the achingly human need to connect. At times wildly funny, at times deeply moving, this “quiet gem of a play” (Charles Isherwood, New York Times) shows how silence can often speak volumes.
Note: This play is almost entirely devoid of dialogue, but there is plenty of communication through body language, movement, and facial expressions.
THE TEACHER – (any gender, any ethnicity, age range 40+) The leader of the silent yoga retreat, and the guru to whom the other six characters are drawn. The Teacher is only ever heard, never seen, throughout the course of the play, and as such has most of the play’s sparse dialogue. While they present a calm, all-knowing persona to their students, it becomes clear that they may not be as in control as they would like. Has an accented way of speaking, which could be affected or foreign. And. Pauses a lot at. Odd moments.
JOAN – (female, any ethnicity, age range 45-55) A therapist and sex educator in colleges, high schools, and with couples in private counseling. Wears a lot of clothing and jewelry from India. An avid practitioner of yoga. Judy’s partner.
JUDY – (female, any ethnicity, age range 45-55) Top art department editor at OMagazine. Sleeps very little, sends and receives lots of emails, and likes to be in control. Not very interested in spirituality, but madly in love with her partner Joan. Note: This role requires smoking on stage.
ALICIA – (female, any ethnicity, age range 30-35) From Southern California. Makes a lot of noise even when she is “in silence” by fidgeting, wearing loud jewelry, breathing loudly, etc. Maybe she’s just blissfully unaware, maybe she likes to be watched. Very new to spirituality. Note: This role requires partial nudity.
NED – (male, any ethnicity, age range 40-50) A recovering alcoholic who turned to spirituality after a bad luck streak that would rival the Book of Job. He has finally saved up enough money to go on this particular retreat with this particular teacher, whom he greatly admires. Note: This role requires partial nudity.
RODNEY – (male, any ethnicity, age range 30-40) Ageless, fit, gorgeous yoga instructor from the Pacific Northwest who now teaches in New York and the Hamptons. He has a sizable following on YouTube. Wears a lot of man-jewelry, but he’s pulling it off. Note: This role requires full nudity.
JAN – (male, caucasian [Scandinavian], age range 50-60) A Lutheran pastor on a one- year sabbatical to study religious life around the world. Sweet, friendly, with a continually curious air about him. Found religion later in life after a personal tragedy. Note: This role requires smoking on stage.
