—THE GAME’S AFOOT: HOLMES FOR THE HOLIDAYS—
Virginia Repertory Theatre’s Historic Hanover Tavern season (PLAY)
Written by Ken Ludwig
Directed by Debra Clinton
It is December 1936 and Broadway star William Gillette, admired the world over for his leading role in the play Sherlock Holmes, has invited his fellow cast-members to his Connecticut castle for a weekend of revelry. But when one of the guests is stabbed to death, the festivities in this isolated house of tricks and mirrors quickly turn dangerous. Then it’s up to Gillette himself, as he assumes the persona of his beloved Holmes, to track down the killer before the next victim appears. The danger and hilarity are non-stop n this glittering whodunit set during the Christmas holidays.
Rehearsals begin: Monday, October 29, 2018
Performance run: November 30 – December 30, 2018
WILLIAM GILETTE (30s-50s, male)– Based on the American actor of the same name who wrote the play Sherlock Holmes in collaboration with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A strikingly handsome man, good-humored, full of irony and life. A sort of modern-day Ulysses. Obsessed with gadgets and technology. The line that separates the actor William Gillette from his famed performance as Sherlock Holmes is blurry.
This role is cast.
MARTHA GILLETTE (70s, female) mother by blood to William Gillette. Mothering in nature to all who know her, which makes her fiercely protective of those she loves. A somewhat vague and dithering woman, otherwise.
FELIX GEISEL (40’s, male) An actor. Histrionic and arch in a Lionel Barrymore/Sir Toby Belch sort of way. Married to Madge.
MADGE GEISEL (40s, female) An actress. Flamboyant and wry in a Rosalind Russell smart-mouthed-girl-about-town sort of way. Married to Felix.
SIMON BRIGHT (20’s-30’s, male) An actor. Sweet and enthusiastic, if not a little bit stupid. Recently married to Aggie.
AGGIE WHEELER (20’s-30’s, female) An actress. Beautiful, bright-eyed, full of spunk. Recently married to Simon. Her last husband, Hugo, died, unexpectedly during a skiing accident on their honeymoon!
INSPECTOR HARRIET GORING (40’s-50’s, female) British, eccentric, and one of a kind. One minute she seems wry and clever, the next minute she is off in a world of her own. She gets things wrong without even knowing it, yet she also seems just the sort of person who can find you out when you’re lying. That makes her formidable.
DARIA CHASE (40’s, female) gorgeous. Glamorous. She’s one of those people you can’t take your eyes off of; and despite all of her show-biz cattiness, you can’t help liking her…or at least admiring her. She has a sense of humor and has invented herself from the ground up, which is no mean feat.
Seeking local, non-union performers. All performers paid.
