Richmond Shakespeare announces Jan Powell, PhD as Interim Artistic Director through summer 2012. Powell’s official start date is March 15. Powell is based in Oregon, where she was founder and Artistic Director of the Tygres Heart Shakespeare Company in Portland, and where she received her PhD in Theater Arts from the University of Oregon in Eugene. Her professional résumé includes serving as the Artistic Director of the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival from 2007 through 2008, and past president of the international Shakespeare Theatre Association. She has extensive experience in education, training and professional development, theater consulting, community engagement, and leadership in the professional theater community. Cancellation of “Shakespeare and Galileo”

Richmond Shakespeare apologizes for the confusion caused by the recent cancellation of Shakespeare and Galileo, and the consequent failure of Richmond Shakespeare to communicate this to the public. The show, originally scheduled to run this month at Richmond CenterStage, was planned as a co-production with the Science Museum of Virginia’s Carpenter Science Theatre. The decision to cancel was wholly at the request of Richmond Shakespeare as the company works through this period of transition and restructuring.  Unfortunately, we did not act responsibly on our obligation to our partner, the Carpenter Science Theatre, in communicating the decision in a timely fashion. CenterStage Applauds Mayor’s Investment in Growing Richmond’s Creative Economy

- Proposed improvements to Landmark Theater would help bring more revenue to the City – RICHMOND – CenterStage Foundation commended Mayor Dwight Jones’ decision to invest in the Landmark Theater when he proposed $14 million in his Capital Improvements Budget for the historic theater. The investment is part of a proposed $50 million renovation that the Landmark Theater needs in order to ensure the long-term success of the performing arts facility as Richmond’s largest theater. The Landmark Theater is home to much of the Broadway in Richmond Series, The Richmond Forum, and many other shows and events.
