Musical Theater FUNdamentals and Adult Audition Technique with Nathanial Shaw and Anthony Smith

Nathaniel Shaw is the former Artistic Director of Virginia Repertory Theatre where he helmed several award winning productions including In the HeightsWest Side Story, and the World Premiere of River Ditty produced with the Tony Award-winning producer, Glass Half Full Productions. On Broadway, he was an Associate Choreographer for the Tony Award-Winning musical Once and his direction and choreography has been seen at theatres all across America. As a performer, he has graced the stages of some of the industry’s most reputable theatres, including the Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, Sacramento Music Circus, and The Fulton Theatre. As an educator, he is a frequent guest instructor at Virginia Commonwealth University and the co-founder of Demos/Shaw Studios, a full service career, technique, and audition coaching service for professional actors in New York City.

Anthony Smith is Music Supervisor and Music Director in Residence at Virginia Repertory Theatre in Richmond, Virginia. Formally educated in flute, piano, vocal, and percussion performance, Anthony has won several regional and national competitions on each of his instruments. An active proponent of new music, Anthony has been involved in the world premieres of several new musicals and operas, most recently “Atlantis” by Matthew Lee Robinson, Ken Cerniglia, and Scott Anderson Morris, “The Snow Maiden” by Andrew Haile Austin and “Kept” by Kristin Kuster and Megan Levad. In addition to his work with the Education Department at Virginia Rep, he maintains an active private studio comprised of flute, percussion, piano, and voice students. Anthony also has extensive experience in the higher education field, providing musical direction and teaching courses in musicianship, voice, and audition technique for Virginia Commonwealth University, the College of William and Mary, and the University of Richmond.


Training Programs

Musical Theater FUNdamentals

This Fall, West End Academy of Dance is excited to introduce Musical Theater FUNdamentals, taught by Nathaniel Shaw (Former Artistic Director for Virginia Repertory Theatre, Associate Choreographer of Once On Broadway) and Anthony Smith (Music Supervisor for Virginia Rep, Music Director for Theatre VCU). In this fun, dynamic, pre-professional eight week intensive, young musical theater performers will be introduced to the essential building blocks of acting and vocal performance, discovering the necessary tools for success on stage at the college and professional levels.

Over the course of eight weeks students will learn, perform and record a brief musical theater solo hand selected by our professional instructors, incorporating the weekly lessons in vocal technique and acting fundamentals based on the world renowned Stanislavski method. Previous experience in musical theater is not required, but imagination, a desire to learn, and the confidence to sing in front of others are all a MUST!

October 3 – November 21 | 8 Saturdays

Junior Musical Theater FUNdamentals (Middle School) 2:30 – 4:20pm

Senior Musical Theater FUNdamentals (High School) 4:30 – 6:30pm

Adult Audition Technique 

This Fall, West End Academy of Dance is excited to introduce The Professional Audition, taught by Nathaniel Shaw (Former Artistic Director for Virginia Repertory Theatre, Associate Choreographer of Once On Broadway) and Anthony Smith (Music Supervisor for Virginia Rep, Music Director for Theatre VCU). This course is intended to provide the professional actor and serious-minded aspiring actor the tools to succeed in the pressurized and unnerving audition environment. Our experienced instructors will help artists identify audition material that will allow them to shine, and provide simple and effective techniques for fulfilling, specific, and well-rounded PROFESSIONAL auditions.
