The Modlin Center for the Arts at the University of Richmond is pleased to announce its 2017-2018 season. The Modlin Center’s 21st season of programming includes a wide array of Modlin Arts Presents touring performances, National Theatre of Great Britain and Bolshoi Ballet broadcasts, and an eclectic list of offerings from the University of Richmond Department of Theatre and Dance, and Department of Music.

This season’s dynamic Concert Series explores the spectrum of song, including the indie rock mash-up of country, bluegrass, folk, and blues of Shovels & Rope and Mandolin Orange; the soulful singing of GRAMMY®-nominated singer-songwriter Rhiannon Giddens; the driving contemporary bluegrass of The Steep Canyon Rangers with special guest Sierra Hull; and the traditional sounds of The Earls of Leicester. Former Barenaked Ladies front man Steven Page takes a fresh look at the American Songbook with his Art of Time Ensemble, and perennial favorite Danú returns to the Modlin for a St. Patrick’s Day celebration.

A vibrant Jazz Series includes ten-time GRAMMY® Award-winner Eddie Palmieri; an extraordinary evening celebrating The Heart and Soul Queen of New Orleans Irma Thomas, who will be joined by the Blind Boys of Alabama and the Preservation Hall Legacy Quintet; and a special night of holiday music performed by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and special guests Catherine Russell and Kenny Washington. The Jazz Series will also include the stunning vocals of rising star Alicia Olatuja, 2010 Thelonious Monk competition winner and 2016 Grammy® winner Cécile McLorin Salvant, and world-renowned composer Maria Schneider and her orchestra.

An exciting year of classical and chamber music includes the Escher Quartet with guitarist Jason Vieaux, pianist Richard Goode, a special free performance by baritone Thomas Meglioranza and pianist Reiko Uchida, and the Shanghai Quartet with special guests cellist Peter Wiley and violinist Shmuel Ashkenasi. Modlin Arts will host a celebration of the Lunar New Year with the China National Symphony Orchestra led by artistic director and conductor Tan Dun and special guests violinist Sandy Cameron and suonist Liu Wenwen. The Classical and Chamber Music Series will also include violinist Gil Shaham with pianist Akira Eguchi, the Jerusalem Quartet, a new Modlin Center co-commissioned work by Eighth Blackbird, and Sō Percussion with pianist Gilbert Kalish and soprano Dawn Upshaw.

The Modlin Arts Dance Series celebrates a variety of dance genres and includes Michael Sakamotos’s Soil, the Festival of South African Dance featuring Gumboots and Pantsula Dance Companies, Doug Varone and Dancers, Dorrance Dance, and L.A. Dance Project.

In the Theatre, Comedy, and Special Events Series, the Modlin Center welcomes back Ethan Lipton and His Orchestra performing Outer Space, a sequel to the 2013 performance of No Place to Go. The series also features the visually stunning cinematic shadow play Feathers of Fire: A Persian Epic, Circa performing Carnival of the Animals and S, and the improvisational throat-singing of Tanya Tagaq.

In addition to the many pre-and post-show residency activities, this year’s Artist Voices Series welcomes “The Egyptian Jon Stewart,” Bassem Yousseff; Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage; and sound artist and abstract turntablist Maria Chavez.

In addition to Feathers of Fire: A Persian Epic and Circa’s Carnival of the Animals, the Modlin Arts Family and Young Audiences series will feature Theatreworks USA’s Click, Clack, Moo and Mermaid Theatre Company of Nova Scotia’s Guess How Much I Love You and I Love My Little Storybook.

The 2017-2018 Broadcast Series will once again feature broadcasts from the National Theatre of Great Britain (NT Live) and the Bolshoi Ballet. NT Live titles include Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Salomé, Yerma, Angels in America Part One: Millennium Approaches and Part Two: Perestroika, and Peter Pan. Additional titles will be announced throughout the season. This season’s Bolshoi Ballet performances include Le Corsaire, The Taming of the Shrew, Romeo and Juliet, The Lady of Camellias, The Flames of Paris, and Giselle.
