Lucy Dacus introduced the opening track on her new album, Hot and Heavy, Tuesday, April 13 on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The performance was filmed at the November Theatre downtown on the Marjorie Arenstein Stage with her bandmates. The Marquee outside proudly announced Hot and Heavy.
Managing Director Phil Whiteway said, “We were all sworn to silence until she appeared on national television last night. I was touched that she chose our theatre to shoot this important performance. We are all very proud of her achievements in music and so delighted that she remembers her roots in Richmond.”
Lucy’s mother, Sandy Dacus, has been a Musical Director for many Virginia Rep shows over the years, most recently A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, and shared these memories of her daughter.
“It has been a joy to watch Lucy decide on a path (she had SO many early interests – photography, film directing, fashion design, theater, writing….) and pursue it with 100% passion. Lucy has always said that her goal was not fame and fortune, but to “have a voice” and communicate her ideas with others. Seeing that happen has been exciting, and knowing that she is able to make a living doing something she loves is every parent’s dream!”
“My kids grew up in theaters, because of my work as a music director & keyboardist. Lucy’s first experience with Virginia Rep was when I brought her in a car seat to rehearsals for Once on This Island back in 1995! Barbara Carter (the mother of Young Ti Moune) would keep an eye on her while we rehearsed in the Firehouse – now Gallery 5. She was later cast in two versions of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, (elementary school age, then middle school age) and when she was in high school, we had the opportunity to work together on Spring Awakening.”
Lucy will release her new album on June 25th and will tour this summer and fall, beginning with shows at The National September 10 and 11 in Richmond.
