Width will direct Drifty’s North Star Jamboree, the first Youth Theatre production since the community-funded Save the Mill campaign reopened the historic theatre.
Swift Creek Mill Theatre is delighted to announce that Tom Width is returning to the position of Producing Artistic Director! His first Youth Theatre production back will be Drifty’s North Star Jamboree, which he will direct, running on select dates in November/December. Tickets are already on sale!
Tom is a beloved member of the Swift Creek Mill Theatre community who has devoted his lifetime to a theatre career. He has served at various times as an actor, director, scenic designer, and producer. He came to Richmond in 1975 “for a five-week show” and has been a leader in the theatre community ever since. In 2003, he received the Richmond magazine’s Theresa Pollak Prize for Excellence in the Arts.
“The Mill has been my artistic home for more than fifty years, and I have never stopped believing in its value to our community: Our Youth Theatre has entertained and educated tens of thousands of students — and hopefully made them theatregoers for life; our theatre camps have elevated youngsters who aspire to work in the arts; our Mainstage shows have run the gamut from light-hearted fun to intense drama; and our cabaret performances have always showcased the breadth of musical talent available to us — all presented within the beautiful and historic building that we call home. Our generous supporters have made sure that we can move forward with all of these programs. I am honored to continue my work as we explore what comes next”
Width’s return follows the success of the Save the Mill Campaign, which surpassed its $250,000 goal. The campaign brought together longtime patrons, artists, local businesses, and first-time supporters through a community survey, shared stories, and an Open House on the theatre’s plan forward.
“Our donors made it possible to raise the curtain again, and bringing Tom back as Producing Artistic Director honors everything this theatre has been while setting the course for what it will become,” said Shanea Taylor, Board Member and Chair of the Communications Committee. “We are grateful to every person who gave, volunteered, and spread the word.”
