Richmond Triangle Players, the longest continuously operating LGBTQ-themed theatre in the mid-Atlantic region, will close its 33rd season with a new queer re-telling of I Love You Because, the off-Broadway musical celebrating its 20th anniversary.

This will be the final production of the 2025-26 Mainstage Season.

Hailed as “Terrific, refreshing fun,” by The New York Times, this romantic comedy tells the story of Austin Bennet (played in RTP’s production by Calvin Malone), a greeting card writer who walks in on his boyfriend with another man.He is sent back out into the New York City dating scene—the bars, coffee shops, and streets of the East Village—with only his misguided brother, Jeff (Ian Page), to steer him. It’s there that he meets Marty (TeDarryl Perry), a flaky photographer with dating troubles of his own—and his actuarial best friend, Diana (Ally Dods), who is trying to calculate her future. In order to move on with their lives, these four Manhattanites must put their pasts behind them and learn that true happiness isn’t found by loving someone in spite of their faults, but learning to say, I Love You Because.
Also featured in the cast are Chelsea Baldree, Madison Hatfield, August Hundley, and Chewie Lo Moore, with swings and Mason Patrick and Jasmin Purchas.Rounding out the creative team will be associate director and choreographer Adam Fleming (Broadway’s Hairspray and Wicked), musical director Robert Stoop (RTP’s The Rocky Horror Show with Richmond Symphony), scenic designer Frank Foster (most recently, RTP’s A Strange Loop), costume designer Tajma Graham (Immediate Family), lighting designer Steven Koehler (The Golden Girls: The Lost Episodes), and longtime RTP designers Tim Moehring (props), Luke Newsome (hair and makeup). Lauren Langston is production stage manager.
