![]() Celebrating 60 Years • 1965–2025 • Working to Secure the Next 60 Years Our Path Forward: What’s Next for the Mill For 60 years, Swift Creek Mill Theatre has been a gathering place for this community — a historic gristmill turned stage where generations have shared an evening out. Earlier this year, we made the difficult decision to pause our season. That pause was not the end of the story. It was the beginning of a careful, honest look at how to bring the Mill back stronger. Here’s where things stand, and what comes next. Why We Paused For years, the Mill spent more than it brought in. This wasn’t the result of mismanagement or misuse of funds — it was the result of good intentions that didn’t add up. Time and again, the organization invested in bigger productions, expanded offerings, and a full restaurant operation, believing each investment would grow revenue enough to cover its cost. Too often, it did not. Each year’s shortfall carried into the next, and the pattern repeated. Running a full dinner service alongside live theatre, in particular, asked more of our small staff and budget than it returned, pulling time and money away from the plays, musicals, and youth programming at the heart of our mission. By this spring, it was clear we could not responsibly finish the season or plan a new one without first breaking that cycle. So, the Board paused operations and got to work on a plan. How We Built the Plan Rather than guess at solutions, we did the homework. Over several months, volunteers and Board members dug into years of financial, donor, and programming records, talked to peer theatres across Virginia and in North Carolina about what works at our scale, and most importantly, listened to you. Nearly 1,100 community members responded to our survey, telling us what you love about the Mill and what you want to see more of. What’s Changing No more full-scale restaurant. We’re stepping back from full dinner service so our team can focus on great theatre, music, and youth programming — the things that make the Mill the Mill. A smaller, smarter season to start. We’re not going to over promise. Our first season back will be leaner than in years past, growing responsibly as ticket sales and donations allow. A real fundraising program. For the first time, we’re building a dedicated development effort — an Annual Fund, sponsorships, and building upon the first two years’ success of our Gala. A Board built for this next phase. We’re identifying the specific skills and expertise the Mill needs most right now — finance, fundraising, governance, and legal expertise among them — and recruiting new Board members who bring that experience forward. What Stays the Same The heart of the mission isn’t changing. You’ll still find the same historic charm inside a working gristmill dating back to 1663 — a place no other theatre in the region can replicate. We’re still committed to great live theatre and music, to nurturing young performers, and to being the cultural home of South Central Virginia. The Timeline Now: Launching a $250,000 Save the Mill campaign to assure the capability to implement the new Business Plan If $250,000 is secured by September 30th, then proposed next steps would include: Fall 2026: Rebuilding our Board, putting core staff back in place, and launching a formal fundraising program. December 2026: Drifty the Snowman returns — our first show back on stage. 2027: A leaner season of Mainstage shows and live music, growing as donations and ticket sales support it. 2027 and beyond: A fuller season each year, with youth programming, summer camps, and community events expanding alongside our financial footing. How You Can Help Make a tax-deductible contribution now to Save the Mill. We have to see that the community will support our mission both now and for years to come. Make plans now to be a part of our new Annual Fund. Whether you can give one larger renewing gift each year, or divide that gift into 12 manageable, monthly payments is how we will build the steady, dependable support the Mill has never had before. Stay tuned for details on Community Open Houses, where you can learn more about the Plan and share what you’d most like to see from the Mill’s next chapter. Spread the word. Tell a neighbor, share a post, bring a friend — word of mouth is one of our most powerful tools. Consider volunteering. From Board service to front-of-house support, we welcome community members ready to pitch in. A Word of Honesty We won’t pretend this is risk-free. Rebuilding an audience, taking care of a 350-year-old building we don’t own, and doing it all on a tight timeline is hard work. But we’re doing it differently this time — with real data, a real plan, and real accountability to our Board and to you. Thank you for sticking with us through this pause. We can’t wait to welcome you back through our doors. Help reach the Goal: To help us reach out fundraising goal of $250,000 Robert and Karen Wasilewski have stepped forward to offer a challenge. For every dollar donated, they will match 1:1 up to $5,000. Donate Now While we try to keep our F.A.Q. page up to date.
