July 12 – August 2 A summer Bonus Show! Some may recall the 1996 film of the same name which featured Ellen Burstyn, Marcia Gay Harden, and Will Patton. As a musical, it had the rather ominous misfortune of opening off-Broadway on September 7, 2001, though featured some prominent theatre legends including Phyllis Somerville and Liz Callaway, and was noted as a musical whose message was much needed following the events of September 11th. Its short run concluded on October 14, 2001, but it earned several nominations by both the Outer Critics Circle and Drama League. Since then, it’s been produced over 700 times worldwide. The Spitfire Grill is a musical that places human kindness, forgiveness and hope on full display as a rural town struggles to save The Spitfire Grill from bankruptcy. This healing story of a community’s rebirth is told through a beautiful folk inspired score “Soulful … The amiable country-flavored tunes and lyrics are … transcendent. What in normal times would be a joy is, in these troubled ones, sheer nourishment.” – New York magazine |
