AUDITIONS: “Safety” – Firehouse Theatre

SAFETY Audition Notice  

Firehouse Theatre is announcing auditions for a staged workshop and the world premiere production of Safety (musical), written by Irene Zieger with music by John Winn, directed and choreographed by Producing Artistic Director Nathaniel Shaw, to be performed at Firehouse Theatre in Richmond, VA. 

Synopsis: 

Haunted after a terrifying home invasion, Camille purchases a gun to protect herself and her ailing mother. Ziegler and Winn explore what it means to be safe in this darkly comic new musical.


Seeking: 

Union and non-union musical theatre performers (singers who move) for the following roles: 

CAMILLE, late 30’s – 40s, Haunted by a recent home invasion. Will go to whatever lengths necessary to protect herself and her ailing mother. Becomes proficient at handling guns. Vocal range: mezzo-soprano

THE BOOGEYMAN 30s-50s. Camille’s trauma, personified. Frightening and charismatic. Vocal range: baritone/tenor 

MARGARET,  late 60’s – 70’s,  Camille’s mother. Suffering from dementia. Sweet with an edge, but easily rattled or frightened. Has a simple dance number. Vocal range: alto

GEORGE, mid 30’s – 40’s, A novice gun salesman. Upbeat. A bit too eager to find love. Trying to rebuild his life after a tragedy. Plays very basic ukulele. Handles guns with some proficiency. Vocal range: tenor

RANDY, 30’s, George’s younger brother. Owns the gun store. Arrogant and condescending, but underneath, is insecure. Handles guns with some proficiency. Vocal range: baritone/tenor

 MR. CRANK, 30’s – 40’s,  Tightly wound and self important. A rule follower and firmly believes everyone else should be too. The father of a young child. 

Vocal range: baritone/tenor

MS. JACKSON, 40’s 50’s. Black. Adult protective services agent. Overworked Tough, but not uncaring. Suspicious of Camille. 

Vocal range: alto or mezzo-soprano

SMALL ENSEMBLE, to play news anchors, store clerks, dancing Raggedy Ann dolls, and more! 


Firehouse seeks collaborative, hardworking, kind, inspired, and inspiring actors, who are ready to support one another and invest in the overall success of the project and the organization. Firehouse supports playwrights and directors in their visions for both culturally-appropriate and non-traditional casting.

Wednesday, October 29th 6-10pm CALLBACKS BY INVITATION ONLY

Video Submissions: 

Out of market actors are welcome to audition. An in-person audition is preferred, but if unable to attend in person, you may submit a video of the completed audition packet (audition and callback sides) no later than 5pm,Thursday October 23rd. 

What to prepare: 

Please prepare 16-32 bars of two (2) contrasting musical theatre songs in the style of Stephen Schwartz, Stephen Sondheim, William Finn, or Jason Robert Brown. 

Workshop Dates: 

Rehearsals begin on/around Monday, February 2nd, 2026

*Rehearsals will be on weekday evenings and weekends

Presentations February 13th and 14th, 2026

World Premiere Rehearsal and Performance Dates: 

Rehearsals will begin on/around Monday, June 1st, 2026

*Rehearsals will be on weekday evenings and weekends

Performances run July 8th through July 26th, 2026

Additional Casting Note:

Actors may be offered the workshop only or may be offered both the workshop and world premiere production. If you are offered the workshop only, you are under consideration for the world premiere production. If you are offered both the workshop and world premiere, participation in both is strongly preferred. 

Compensation: 

For the workshop: All actors will receive a project stipend of $250. 

For the World Premiere Production: Members of Actors Equity will be on the new Single Engagement Agreement (category 1, tier B), $550 weekly minimum. Non-union actors are paid $1750 – $2100 for the project commensurate with experience and the size of the role.
